Frequently asked questions
Caravan and trailer insurance covers you for accidental loss or damage to your caravan or trailer caused by events such as accidents, or natural events such as storms or fires, as well as theft.
It also provides up to $20 million legal liability cover,4 which can cover you if you’re found liable to pay compensation to someone because you’ve accidentally damaged their property.
The cost of your insurance is called a ‘premium’. Your premium will depend on a number of factors, and can change each year when you renew your policy. Your premium for each period of insurance will be shown on your policy schedule.
There are several factors that determine how your premium is calculated, including your risk profile, such as:
- Where your caravan or trailer is parked when you’re not using it
- The type of caravan or trailer you’re insuring
- The amount and type of cover you require
- Your claims history
- The likelihood of a claim being made on your policy
- Any discounts that may apply
- Any compulsory government charges such as Stamp Duty and GST
- Any other charges Allianz tells you about
- Any optional covers you choose
It's important to consider whether Comprehensive Motor Insurance or Third Party Property Damage Motor Insurance are right for you. For example, having Third Party Property Damage Motor Insurance for your vehicle can cover any damage you cause to other people's vehicles or property while towing your caravan or trailer.
Most car insurance policies cover your vehicle while towing a caravan or trailer, but many won't cover damage to your caravan or trailer if it’s involved in an accident. That's why it's important to check your car insurance policy and consider taking out additional caravan or trailer insurance.
