Frequently asked questions
Contents Insurance for renters covers the cost of repair or replacement of your contents when loss or damage is caused by events such as break-ins, fires (including bushfire6 and grassfire6), flood6, storms6, impact damage such as a fallen tree, as well as accidental breakage of glass and more. Limits apply. For full details, see the relevant PDS.
The cost of your insurance is called a ‘premium’. Your premium will depend on a number of factors, and can change each year when you renew your policy. Your premium for each period of insurance will be shown on your policy schedule.
There are a number of factors that determine how your Allianz Contents Insurance premium is calculated, including:
- Your risk profile. Allianz will work this out using a number of factors, such as:
- Where you live
- The type of property you’re insuring
- The amount and type of cover you require
- Any other people also insured under the policy
- The relevant claims history of the people being insured
- The likelihood of a claim being made on your policy
- Any discounts that may apply
- Any compulsory government charges such as Stamp Duty and GST
- Emergency Services Levies if they apply to the State or Territory where your home is located
- Any other charges Allianz tells you about
- The excess you choose7

If you take out Allianz Contents Insurance, here’s how it can work if you suffer an insured loss:
- The house or apartment you live in burns down and destroys all your contents within it. With adequate sums insured under Renters Contents cover, you could replace your insured contents.
- A thief enters your house or apartment and steals your contents. You can replace the items that were stolen under your Contents Insurance.
- While rearranging your furniture, you accidentally drop your bookshelf on your glass coffee table, and the glass breaks. Your Allianz Contents Insurance covers accidental breakage of glass that forms part of your contents in your home (other than those contents that are excluded such as televisions – see the relevant PDS). If you take out optional Accidental Damage cover, Allianz will repair or replace the whole coffee table including the glass.
Flood cover is included in Renters Insurance policies that start from 14 January 2025.6
For Home Insurance policies starting before 14 January, flood cover was optional.
If you’re a renewing customer, you may be able to continue without flood cover if:
- you previously opted out and met certain flood risk criteria
- we weren’t able to offer you flood cover
- we've agreed you can opt-out of flood cover as standard

*Conditions apply
- Online discount
Home: When you both quote and buy a new Home Insurance policy online, a discount of up to 10% is applied to your first year’s premium. This discount is not applied to Domestic workers’ compensation (if available and selected), or upon renewal. Minimum premiums apply. - Landlord: When you both quote and buy a new Landlord Insurance policy online, a discount of up to 10% is applied to your first year’s premium. This discount is not applied to Landlord workers’ compensation (if available and selected), or upon renewal. Minimum premiums may apply.
- Minimum premiums may apply
Where discounts are applied, your premium is subject to rounding. If more than one discount applies, they’re applied in a predetermined order, so the later discounts apply to the amount already reduced by the earlier discounts instead of the total amount. Discounts do not apply to government taxes and charges.
Most discounts won’t apply below the minimum amount payable for the policy.
- Up to 30% No Claim Bonus
When you take out a new policy, Allianz will calculate your No Claim Bonus (NCB) based on your home or landlord (as applicable) insurance claims history. To qualify for the maximum No Claim Bonus of up to 30%, Home Insurance customers must have had no Building or Contents Insurance claims in the preceding 5 years. Landlord customers must have had no Landlord insurance claims in the preceding 3 years. However, customers who have had claims may still qualify for a reduced No Claim Bonus. We won’t apply the full percentage of the No Claim Bonus if it results in you paying less than the minimum premium.
The No Claim Bonus isn’t applied to the flood component of the premium (if covered) or Domestic workers’ compensation (if available and selected) or Portable contents (if selected). - Pay by instalments
If you choose to pay your premium by instalments, you do not pay us any more than if you pay your premium in one lump sum annually. The premiums payable by instalments may be subject to minor adjustments (upwards or downwards) due to rounding. Note: Your financial institution may apply transaction fees to instalment payments. - Portable Contents
Some portable contents must be specified on your policy schedule as Listed Portable Contents to be covered.
- 72-hour exclusion period may apply
Allianz may not provide cover for any loss of or damage to your property caused by cyclone, flood, flood water combined with run-off and/or rainwater, grassfires and bushfires during the first 72 hours after you first purchase a policy or increase your cover under an existing policy. Refer to PDS for when exclusion periods apply. - Option to change your excess
Not available with respect to any additional compulsory excess, any imposed excess applied to the policy, or to the Portable Contents excess (if Portable Contents is selected). Any reduction in premium won’t be applied to government taxes and charges, any flood component of the premium (where covered), or to the optional covers Portable Contents (if selected) and Domestic workers’ compensation (if available and selected). Minimum premiums may apply.
